Plans for Dublin’s Tallest Skyscraper take a Knock
March 26, 2018
An Bord Pleanála has knocked back Johnny Ronan’s plans to build a 22-storey building on the banks of the Liffey.
Last year, the developer filed for planning permission to construct an 88 metre tall tower on a site adjoining Tara Street Dart Station. The plans for the development included a 110-bedroom hotel and rooftop bar.
Dublin City Council refused planning permission last summer on the grounds that the tower would have a negative impact on the character of Custom House, “one of the city’s most important architectural set pieces”.
Ronan appealed the decision to the national planning body and requested a hearing, which took place last October. After reviewing the case, An Bord Pleanála’s senior planning inspector Gillian Kane recommended that the board should grant permission for the proposed development.
Nevertheless, after considering the advice, the planning body dismissed Kane’s recommendation and refused planning permission for the project.
The developer can still appeal this latest decision to the High Court, and if Ronan gets the all-clear to construct the development, it would become Dublin’s tallest building – dwarfing Google’s 67m headquarters in Grand Canal Dock – another Ronan development – and the 59m Liberty Hall on Eden Quay.
