THIRD ANNUAL DOCKLAND BOOK SALE
Five organisations from the Docklands Seniors Providers Forum (Crosscare, Ringsend Community Centre, Lourdes Day Care Centre, Docklands Senior Forum and Sean O’Casey Community Centre) again are joining forces to raise much needed funds to continue their work in the Docklands community. Dublin City Council, National College of Ireland and the Irishtown Ringsend Primary Care Centre also support the event. All books will be sold for €1 and there will be a selection of up to 20,000 books. The proceeds from this sale will be distributed to partnering agencies for older people who provide critical services for older people living in the Docklands area.
The Dublin Docklands Development Authority is backing this initiative by promoting the event and encouraging businesses throughout the Docklands to get involved.
“This wonderful collective fundraising initiative reflects the commitment of the whole community, including; businesses, charities, the public sector, the academic community and older people themselves coming together to raise much needed funds to improve the quality of life of older people. It is inspiring.” said Linda Desmond, Regional Coordinator of Crosscare.
For the last ten years these organisations, as part of the Docklands Seniors Forum and the Seniors Providers Forum, have been working together to identify the needs of older people in the area through their own networks, as well as through needs-assessment surveys carried out in the area by its member organisations.
Their collective work has resulted in improving transportation services; expanding activities and reducing isolation of some of the most vulnerable Dockland older people. It has also helped to support new initiatives such as the League, which provides older men an opportunity to compete in pool competition throughout Dublin and Appointment Companions, who accompany vulnerable people to doctors and hospital visits. One of the newest projects is It’s Time to Talk which is a DVD created in the Docklands that opens dialogue for positive change between the older and younger generations.
Members of the Dockland Forums and community partners invite you to donate your books and attend the highlight of any book lover’s year-The Sixth Annual Dockland Book Sale. Remember 20,000 books to choose from all for €1. Book Donations can be dropped off at the Dublin Docklands Development Authority’s offices and other locations listed on the poster.
