Free public Wi-Fi system to be rolled out in Dublin city

A new free public Wi-Fi system is to be rolled out in Dublin city following a successful trial.

“OpenRoaming” was initially deployed at Barnardo Square, Dame Street and Dublin City Council’s Amphitheatre and the success of the trial will now pave the way for a larger city-wide deployment.

It will enable residents and visitors to log in only once and then maintain connectivity as their smartphones, tablets and other Wi-Fi devices automatically switch between different public Wi-Fi hotspots.

The trial was initiated by Dublin City Council’s “Smart Dublin” programme and was supported by the Wireless Broadband Alliance and Virgin Media.

It also involved participation from CommScope.
