After being shelved eight years ago, plans for a cable car service in Dublin City Centre have been revisited.

The proposed cable car service would along the River Liffey from the Docklands to Heuston Station. Developer Barry Boland first derived the concept in 2006. With an expected price tag of €80million, Boland’s vision is for this scheme to become an iconic tourist attraction to rival the London Eye and Paris’ Eiffel Tower.

It was Labour councillor, Dermot Lacey who proposed the idea be examined once again. Cllr Lacey believes there should be a “full and transparent debate” on the issue.

“We have to be more creative,” he said, “we have to support those who are creative and imaginative”. Planning permission can not currently be submitted without approval from the council as the supports for the cable car would be located on public property.
