New section of Royal Canal Cycle route opens

A new section of Dublin’s Royal Canal Cycle route has been opened.

Phase 2 of the cycleway links the Dublin Docklands with the North Strand and includes a raised 110 metre viaduct for walking and cycling onto Newcomen Bridge at the North Strand.

There is also a pontoon for kayaks and a public space area at the start of the section in Sheriff Street.

Minister for Climate Action and Transport Eamon Ryan said some “pinch points” can be expensive but the essential component of a cycle route is to make it continuous.

The Government hopes to build a 7.65 km Greenway along the Royal Canal from Dublin Docklands to Ashtown, at the further end of the Phoenix Park by the end of 2022.
