Bord Gáis Energy Theatre

Bord Gáis Energy Theatre has become an essential addition to the Irish cultural landscape. With a visit to our theatre, you and your loved ones will be mesmerised by a world of wonder, imagination, emotion and creativity.

The Inspiration Behind Architecture

Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is an iconic architectural landmark designed by a world-renowned architect, Daniel Libeskind. In Libeskind’s words, “the theatre overlooks a public plaza. Like a grand outdoor lobby, the plaza invites the public to view the soaring glass façade of the theatre much like a glass curtain, which tilts back in space in diagonal pleats. The public can gaze into its Piranesian interior of horizontal ramps and diagonal pilotes.

Theatre design

The design concept for the theatre is, in fact, stages – the theatre’s ‘real’ stage and the plaza as another, equally real but more provisional and changing stage. By night, when… the theatre’s tilting façade and plaza are illuminated, the entire complex transforms into a multi-experiential stage. Bord Gáis Energy Theatre has pushed the boundaries of architecture, design and acoustics, making it a landmark project in Ireland.
